BZK Based Sanitizer IS effective against COVID-19 | In Under 300 words

For months, based on “as-yet limited” research on what actually works to disinfect SARS-CoV-2, the CDC has recommended that only sanitizer’s with concentrations of at least 65% alcohol be used in the fight against the spread of dangerous viruses- specifically COVID-19.  

A recent study conducted by Brigham Young University researchers challenged that recommendation by exploring how  effective sanitizers that used benzalkonium chloride (BZK) as an active ingredient  were in deactivating the virus.   

Tests concluded that the virus, when tested on living cells, failed to invade the cells indicating that it had been deactivated by the compounds found in BZK hand sanitizers- killing at least 99.9% of the virus within 15 seconds.  Lead study author Benjamin Ogilvie stated: “Our results indicate that alcohol free hand sanitizer works just as well, so we could, maybe even should, be using it to control COVID.”
