Does This Work without Alcohol?

Yes.  The active ingredient in Total Sanitizer’s line of products is Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK).  BZK is a commonly used antiseptic agent in the health care industry, demonstrating the ability to effectively protect against bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. 

BZK is in many over the counter consumer products like sanitizer, soaps, mouthwashes, spermicidals, ear/eye/nasal sprays or drops, Bactine and many others.

Is Total Sanitizer FDA Approved?

In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration banned 28 active ingredients used for common, over the counter consumer antiseptic rubs- including Triclosan.  Three active ingredients (ethanol alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and benzalkonium chloride- or BZK) were deferred by the FDA, meaning that products containing these ingredients are eligible for evaluation under the OTC Drug safety and efficacy guidelines. 

Drugs used in over the counter products are not reviewed and/or approved by the FDA.  However, these drugs may be marketed if they comply with applicable regulations and policies set forth.

What is BZK?

Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK) is an alcohol free, antimicrobial compound that’s been widely used in the healthcare industry for 60+ years.  Primarily used as a leave on, monograph skin antiseptic, BZK’s chemical properties have shown to effectively reduce the persistence of antimicrobial activity on human tissue – as it’s gentel enough to use on cuts and open wounds.
